  • Money Matters : Cash/Card, Liras or Foreign Currency
Cash or Card : Cash is always king but cards are widely accepted in Kalkan and surrounding areas. Almost all restaurants and major shops will accept cards. If you are intending to use a card, make sure its one that has low/no fees for foreign travel. Cards : Clarity, Revolut, Wise, Starling, Chase, Monzo and Currensea : all of these have low or no fee versions on offer and some have excellent exchange rate mechanisms. Check with your provider and use a card thats good for traveling. For some extra reading and suggestions, search for "foreign travel atm cards" Cash : You will need some cash as not everyone takes cards. Small restaurants, taxis, market traders, bus/minibus and similar will not accept cards and you will need to have some cash on hand. When tipping, cash will be required. While you can get cash from ATMs, this is very much discouraged due to various fees associated with them. Bring the cash you need as ATMs can be hit and miss and filled with excess fees. What Cash to bring : If you have Turkish Liras, bring them. If you dont have any, then dont worry about it, just bring a major currency with you (Dollars, Pounds, Euros) and you can get Turkish Lira after arrival in Kalkan. If you are coming from a country with minor currency (Yen, CAD, Sfr, HKD, RMB and similar), dont bother bringing those - only bring one of the 3 major currencies as they will get fair exchange rate. You will have difficulty changing minor currencies. Speaking of minor currencies, Scottish, NI, Gibraltar pounds are considered minor - leave them at home as you will have difficult time getting those changed at a fair price. Major Currency discounts : Cards cost merchants money as they need to pay fees when taking cards. Many merchants and restaurants will offer you discounts if you decide to pay in cash. The discounts can be sizeable if you decide to pay in a major currency (Dollars, Pounds, Euros) that you have brought. These discounts are not always advertised. Dont be shy and ask, you will usually get something significant if you ask. Turkish Liras : If you do not have Liras, dont worry about it. You can get some when you arrive in the resort. When seeking Liras, dont change your money in your home country and dont change your money at the airport - both will give you terrible exchange rates. Bring your Dollars, Pounds or Euros into Kalkan. While walking around town you will see many currency boards in front of the many exchange points or stores. Exchange your foreign currency at one that you find appealing or better yet, spend it and receive discounts when spending foreign currency. ATMs : Take a simple advice : Bring some good amount of cash! Cash is good for emergencies, when cards dont work and to avoid ATM fees. If you forget to bring cash with you, there are ATM machines dotted all around the resort. You will be able to get some cash out but depending on the ATM and your card, it could be a very painful journey. Some cards and some ATMs (depending on networks & agreements) will have low limits and very high fees. Getting charged 8-10% is not unusual. Getting hit with minimum fees of $10 for taking out $50 is not uncommon. Heed our warning and listen to good advice : Bring cash with you and do not depend on ATMs. Foreign money ATMs : Unless you have a very specific card and using a very specific machine (eg Barclays Card, TEB machine, taking out Pounds), expect to get soaked if you decide to take out Dollars/Euros/Pounds from various machines around town. You will have lower fees if you use govt affiliated bank ATMs vs private banks ATMs, but you are pretty much guaranteed to get hit with hefty fees no matter which one you choose, if you choose to take out foreign currency from the ATM. Govt ATMs will have lower fees but will have lower limits. Private ATMs will have higher limits but higher fees. No matter which you use, you will get dinged with fees even if your bank does not charge fees - these are fees on this side of the transaction. Turkish Money ATMs : Getting Turkish Liras out of ATMs will generally cost lot less than taking out foreign currency. There are many cards out there that have low (or no) fees for doing foreign exchange withdrawals. Check terms and conditions of the cards carefully for limits, fees if you go above those limits and the like. On this side of the world, you will have the choice of using Govt Affiliated ATMs (no fees) and Private ATMs (med to high fees). Choose your ATM carefully to avoid very high fees. Govt Affiliated Banks : All of these banks have ATMs across Turkey. If you decide to take out Turkish Lira from them, you will face no fees on this side of the transaction. If you are using a no fee card, then the entire transaction will be no fee. Check your card issuer for details for your card. The list of banks : Ziraat Bankası, HalkBank, ING Bank, Şekerbank, Finansbank, Ptt Bank, VakıfBank Private Banks : These banks have ATMs and they will charge you various fees, no matter what your card charges you. These banks fees can be high. Unless you are desperate, its best you avoid these ATMs at all times. Akbank, QNB Finansbank, Garanti, Bankamatik, YapiKredi, Denizbank Lastly..... DCC : If you are ever asked "do you wish to pay in your own currency" during an ATM or credit card transaction, the correct answer is always NO. Avoid DCC and you will avoid extra useless charges.
